TREATMENT OF CORONAVIRUS
Specific medicine to prevent or treat the new COVID-19
To date, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the new COVID-19. The infected people receive appropriate care to relieve and treat symptoms and those that are severely ill are given optimised supportive care. Some specific treatments are under investigation and will be tested through clinical trials. The World Health Organisation is working with various partners to speed up research efforts.
The effectiveness of antibiotics to prevent and treat COVID-19
The antibiotics do not work against a virus but are only used to fight bacterial infections. They, therefore, cannot be used as a prevention or treatment of the COVID-19 or any virus. However, if one is hospitalised for the COVID-19, he or she may receive antibiotics since bacterial co-infection is possible.
